No batteries required...full moon on 15th July!

I am reliably informed (thanks Hugh!) that there will be a 'full moon' on 15th of July.

Obviously when I say "full" it will no fuller than it's been at the same point in its cycle for the last four and a half billion years, but nevertheless it will be shining (or more accurately reflecting) brightly on the night of the 16th.

For those of you who had hoped that your head-torches would produce enough light to see beyond the end of your feet (unless you have really big feet, when even this might be expecting a little too much from them!) this is good news.

Good news because - given that I have ordered a cloudless sky for the night of the 16th, with a low of 13 degrees - it will never get totally dark.

We will be able to see cows and sheep for what they are, without climbing onto their backs in the darkness thinking they are small hills; we will be able to see the renowned Black Panther of the South Downs (hopefully) before it sees us etc etc.

Most importantly we may be able to be 'torch free', and as the (slightly adapted) song goes:

"...Torch free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Torch free to follow your heart

Torch free and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star

Torch free, where no walls divide you
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Torch free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're torch free

(Torch free, where no walls divide you)
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Torch free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're torch free"
