Plans for Samoan Trailwalker Challenge in tatters

For anybody who say the episode of "QI" which featured Johnny Vegas and his response to the question regarding the effect of the International Date Line on those who live closest to it, can only imagine what he will think about the following article.

However, far more serious is the impact on my "plans" - albeit in their infancy at the moment - of initiating the inaugural 'Samoan Trailwalker Challenge' event on 30 December 2011.

It now transpires, and you'd think that they could have consulted with me first, that Samoa plans to leap 24 hours into the future - on 31st December 2011 - erasing a day and putting an extra kink in the international dateline, so that it can be on the same weekday as Australia, New Zealand and eastern Asia.

However the day they're planning to erase will be the second day of my planned Trailwalker Challenge, meaning that competitors starting at 6am will only have a maximum of 18 hours to complete the 100km distance. A second longer and 24 hours will have to be added to their times, which will result in automatic disqualification!

These "plans" now appear in tatters as the Samoan prime minister wants to move his nation into the same time zone as Australia.

Oh well, back to the drawing board!
